We love wine-related upcycling. Just think about all the potential to upcycle on a wine farm! We were invited to explore the beautiful Creation wine estate to check out all their wine farm upcycles. Creation is a gorgeous vineyard in South Africa’s Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge. There we met with co-owners Carolyn and Jean-Claude Martin to chat about upcycling on their wine farm.

Our visit to Creation started with a wine and canapé tasting. This was our first glance at the many wine farm upcycles; the delicious canapés were served on old wine barrel staves!

We loved the presentation of the canapés and were impressed to discover Creation offers food pairing for all dietary requirements. Above you can see the regular, banting, and vegetarian offerings.

To create the wine barrel stave upcycles, Creation works with local community project, the Joshua tree. The Joshua tree upcycles their old wine barrels and provides local employment and skills. They also upcycle the tops of the wine barrels to create these stunning cheese boards!

Creation owners Carolyn and Jean-Claude started Creation in 2002. While the area had previously been used for sheep grazing, the duo saw the phenomenal potential for wine production in the 450 million year old soils of the fertile valley.

On a tour of the wine cellar, Jean-Claude tells us that the wine barrels are reused 4 times before they are retired and upcycled.

For Creation, upcycling came naturally. Carolyn loves reusing as much as she can. The table that we enjoyed our scrumptious lunch on had once been a barn door!

Carolyn also upcycles old wine crates into tables!

After lunch, we took coffee outside to check out the awesome upcycled patio furniture. These are repurposed from old Creation wine barrel staves and pallets.

When we asked Carolyn about the origin of the wine farm’s name, she summed it up succinctly,

Creation means innovation.
