Robson street in Vancouver BC has a wicked new upcycled art installation. It’s called Pop Rocks and it’s made of giant pillows. During the summer months the 800 block of Robson is closed off to street traffic. From August 15 until 3 September pedestrians will be able to lounge in style.

These ‘rocks’ are twice the upcycle. The covers are made from 4000 square feet of fabric from the old Canada Place sails. The beads inside come from 6000 cubic feet of polystyrene recycled in Metro Vancouver.

The installation was a collaboration by Amber Frid-Jiminez & Joe Dahmen of AFJD Studio and Matthew Soules of MSA. It is sponsored by VIVA Vancouver. VIVA Vancouver focuses on transforming city streets into vibrant public spaces during the Summer months. The goal is to reduce cars and enhance the city’s sense of community.

The initial response has been positive, with enthusiastic lounging and playing. Once the installation ends the pillows will be redistributed to community centres around the city.
